Maitri karuna mudita upekshanam sukha duhkha punya apunya vishayanam bhavanatah chitta prasadanam. (By cultivating friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the sorrowful, delight in the virtuous, and equanimity toward the wicked, the mind retains serene clarity).

Avidya kshetram uttaresham prasupta tanu vichhinnodaranam. (Ignorance of our true nature is the breeding ground for all other afflictions).

Anitya ashuchi duhkha anatmasu nitya shuchi sukha atma khyatir avidya. (Ignorance is mistaking the transient, impure, sorrowful, and non-self for the eternal, pure, joyful, and Self).

Te pratiprasava heyah sukshmah. (These subtle afflictions are destroyed by resolving them back into their primal source).

Dhyana heyas tad vrittayah. (Their gross manifestations are eliminated through meditation).

Heyam duhkham anagatam. (The suffering which is yet to come can and should be prevented).

Drashtri drishyayoh samyogo heya hetuh. (The misidentification of the seer with the seen is the root cause of all suffering).

Prakasha kriya sthiti shilam bhutendriyatmakam bhoga apavargartham drishyam. (The objective world of light, action, and inertia exists to provide experience and ultimate liberation).

Drashta drishi matrah shuddho pi pratyayanupashyah. (The Seer is pure awareness alone; though pure, it witnesses the impressions presented by the mind).

Tad artha eva drishyasya atma. (The very existence of the objective world is solely for the sake of the Seer).

Viveka khyatir aviplava hanopayah. (Unwavering discriminative awareness between the seer and the seen is the ultimate means of liberation).

Yoganga anushthanad ashuddhi kshaye jnanadiptir a vivekakhyateh. (By practicing the eight limbs of yoga, impurities dissolve and the light of wisdom shines forth).

Yama niyama asana pranayama pratyahara dharana dhyana samadhayo ashtav angani. (The eight limbs of yoga are ethical restraint, personal observances, steady posture, breath regulation, sensory withdrawal, concentration, meditation, and absorption).

Ahimsa satya asteya brahmacharya aparigraha yamah. (The ethical restraints are non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, energy conservation, and non-possessiveness).

Ete jati desha kala samaya anavachchhinnah sarvabhauma maha vratam. (These restraints are universal great vows, unconditioned by class, place, time, or circumstance).

Shaucha santosha tapah svadhyaya ishvarapranidhanani niyamah. (The personal observances are purity, contentment, self-discipline, sacred self-study, and devotion to the Divine).

Vitarka badhane pratipaksha bhavanam. (When disturbed by negative thoughts, cultivate the opposite uplifting attitude).

Ahimsa pratishtayam tat sannidhau vaira tyagah. (When established in non-violence, all hostility ceases in one's presence).

Satya pratishtayam kriya phala ashrayatvam. (When established in truthfulness, one's actions naturally yield their rightful fruits).

Asteya pratishtayam sarva ratnopasthanam. (When non-stealing is firmly established, all precious treasures present themselves naturally).

Brahmacharya pratishtayam virya labhah. (When vital energy is conserved and elevated, profound vigor and moral strength are gained).

Aparigraha sthairye janma kathamta sambodhah. (When non-possessiveness is mastered, deep understanding of life's purpose unfolds).

Shauchat sva anga jugupsa parair asamsargah. (Through purity arises clarity of intellect, cheerfulness of mind, and one-pointed focus).

Santoshad anuttamah sukha labhah. (From unconditioned contentment arises unsurpassed happiness).

Kayendriya siddhir ashuddhi kshayat tapasah. (Through self-discipline, impurities are destroyed and mastery of body and senses is attained).

Svadhyayad ishta devata samprayogah. (Through sacred self-study, communion with the divine ideal is realized).

Samadhi siddhir ishvarapranidhanat. (Through complete surrender to the Divine, meditative absorption is perfected).

Sthira sukham asanam. (The meditative posture should be steady, stable, and comfortable).

Prayatna shaithilya ananta samapattibhyam. (Posture is mastered through releasing unnecessary effort and merging awareness into the infinite).

Tato dvandva anabhighatah. (Then one is unassailed by the dualities of heat and cold, pleasure and pain).

Tasmin sati shvasaprashvasayor gati vichchhedah pranayamah. (When posture is steady, pranayama is the conscious regulation of the flow of inhalation and exhalation).

Tatah kshiyate prakasha avaranam. (Then the veil concealing the inner light of wisdom is destroyed).

Dharanasu cha yogyata manasah. (And the mind becomes fit for deep concentration).

Sva vishaya asamprayoge chittasya svarupanukara ivendriyanam pratyaharah. (Sensory withdrawal is when the senses disengage from external objects and rest in the nature of the mind).

Tatah parama vashyatendriyanam. (Then arises supreme mastery over the senses).

Desha bandhash chittasya dharana. (Concentration is the binding of conscious attention to a single focal point).

Tatra pratyayaikatanata dhyanam. (Meditation is the unbroken continuous stream of awareness toward that object).

Tad eva artha matra nirbhasam svarupa shunyam iva samadhih. (Absorption is when awareness shines solely as the object itself, transcending the sense of the meditator).

Trayam ekatra samyamah. (The simultaneous application of concentration, meditation, and absorption is Samyama).

Taj jayat prajnalokah. (Through the mastery of Samyama, the brilliant luminescence of intuitive wisdom dawns).

Tasya bhumishu viniyogah. (Samyama must be applied progressively in successive stages of consciousness).

Purushartha shunya nam gunanam pratiprasavah kaivalyam svarupa pratishtha va chiti shaktir iti. (Kaivalya is the eternal resting of Consciousness in its own sovereign radiance).
